Throw Pillows in Kenya: Prices, Sizes & Where to Buy (2026)
Updated: July 2026 · By the Monsoon Furniture team, Ngara, Nairobi
Throw pillows are the fastest way to change how a living room feels — and the easiest thing to overpay for, because Kenyan pricing is a mess of cover-only listings, mismatched sizes and no clear guidance.
This guide fixes that with three things nobody else publishes for Kenya: a cm-first size chart, a real KSh price ladder dated to 2026, and a plain warning about the cover-versus-filled trap that catches most first-time buyers.
What is a throw pillow (vs a cushion vs a pillow)?
The naming genuinely confuses buyers, so here it is settled. A throw pillow and a cushion are interchangeable words in Kenya for the decorative squares on your sofa. A pillow, unqualified, is what you sleep on. British and hotel listings say scatter cushion for the decorative kind.
Practically, this matters when you shop: a listing for “pillows” at KSh 300 is often a sleeping pillow, not a decorative throw pillow, so always check the photo and size before you compare prices.
Standard throw pillow sizes in Kenya
Sizes here are quoted in centimetres, unlike the inch-based US guides you will find online. This chart is cm-first, with inches in brackets so you can cross-reference any imported cover.
| Size (cm) | Inches | Shape | Best used as |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 × 40cm | 16″ | Square | Small accent, front layer, armchairs |
| 45 × 45cm | 18″ | Square | The everyday standard — middle/front layer |
| 50 × 50cm | 20″ | Square | The other standard — middle layer, larger sofas |
| 60 × 60cm | 24″ | Square | Back layer on 3-seaters and L-shapes |
| 30 × 50cm | 12 × 20″ | Lumbar (rectangular) | Front accent, lower-back support |
For a 3-seater, a mix of 60×60cm at the back, 50×50cm in the middle and a 45×45cm or lumbar in front gives the layered look. For exactly how many of each size to buy per sofa, see our guide to styling cushions on a sofa.

The two Kenyan standards side by side: 45×45cm and 50×50cm, plain and jacquard.
Throw pillow prices in Kenya (2026)
Here is the full price ladder. The right-hand figures are current Monsoon prices, so you have a real reference rather than a vague market average.
| Tier | What you get | Price (KSh) |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace basics | Thin cover, plain fibre, often sealed | 150 – 500 |
| Quality cover only (45×45cm) | Removable, tight weave | from 700 |
| Quality cover only (50×50cm) | Removable, tight weave or jacquard | 750 – 900 |
| Filled cushion (cover + fibre) | Plump, ready to use | 950 – 1,650 |
| Filled cushion (feather) | Softest, longest-lasting feel | up to 2,350 |
| Specialty (knot, smocking, weave) | Sculptural statement pieces | from 1,400 |
As a concrete example, a 45×45cm fibre-and-case throw pillow from Monsoon is KSh 1,650, and the same cover is available with a feather insert or memory foam. Prices are current at July 2026 and vary by size, fabric and filling. Browse the current range on our home décor collection.

A cover and its insert are two prices, not one — a boho cover from KSh 600, plus fibre from KSh 950 filled.
The covers-vs-filled trap (read before you buy)
This one trap costs Kenyan buyers more than any other. That bargain KSh 300–500 throw pillow is frequently just an empty cover. Add a decent insert and you are at KSh 1,000 or more anyway — now split across two purchases, with no guarantee the insert plumps the cover properly.
There is a reason to buy them separately — a good insert outlasts several covers, so you can restyle by season for the price of a cover. But you only save if you understand what you are buying. When we quote a filled cushion, it is filled; when we quote a cover, we say so. If you are working out cover sizing specifically, our cushion covers guide explains why the cover should sit slightly smaller than the insert.
Ask one question: “Is this the cover only, or filled?” If filled, ask the filling type. If cover-only, factor in KSh 350–1,400 more for the insert. That single question saves the most common disappointment in the niche.

Covers from KSh 700, knot pieces from KSh 1,400 — and a feather insert one size up for the plump look.
Where to buy throw pillows in Nairobi
Marketplaces like Jiji and Jumia have the lowest headline prices, but quality is unpredictable and most listings are cover-only. Supermarkets and Instagram sellers are convenient but limited on size and fabric. A furniture workshop is the one place you can get a throw pillow cut to match the exact fabric and colour of your sofa.
That matching is the whole point. A throw pillow bought blind against a colour you half-remember rarely sits right; one made against a sofa we can see does. It is also why our pillows are built around the same sizes as our sofa sets and our L-shape sofas, which need more and larger pillows than most people buy. To order, send a photo on WhatsApp and pay by M-Pesa — the way most Nairobi customers now buy.

Frequently asked questions
How much are throw pillows in Kenya?
Throw pillows in Kenya cost KSh 150–500 for basic marketplace covers, KSh 600–900 for quality removable covers, and KSh 950–1,650 filled, rising to KSh 2,350 for feather-filled. Specialty pieces like knot pillows start at KSh 1,400. A 45×45cm fibre-and-case pillow from Monsoon is KSh 1,650.
What sizes do throw pillows come in?
Standard throw pillow sizes in Kenya are 45×45cm (18″) and 50×50cm (20″). Smaller 40×40cm (16″) suit accents and armchairs, 60×60cm (24″) work as back cushions on large sofas, and 30×50cm (12×20″) lumbar shapes give front-layer support. Most sofas mix 45×45cm and 50×50cm.
Are covers sold with the inserts?
Not always — this is the main pricing trap. Many cheap Kenyan listings are cover-only, so you still need to buy an insert (KSh 350–1,400 depending on fill). Always ask whether a price is cover-only or filled. At Monsoon we quote both clearly so you know exactly what you are paying for.
